The AGDA awards are an annual celebration of the communication and design community from Australia, New Zealand and beyond. The 2018 event saw Melbourne take its turn as host—employing the Peninsula, one of Melbourne’s most expansive event spaces, as the scene for the awards night. The brief was to provide a dynamic opening video to set the scene for the evening.

To offset the opulence of the surrounds—and leveraging the host city’s flourishing creative arts culture, grungy pub-rock scene and a penchant for dressing in black all year round—the opening animation is a raw, unpredictable, stop-motion piece that captures the essence of the host city. Radiating from the iconic AGDA awards triangle, the animation brings to life various design disciplines—from print, to motion graphics, to environmental design—through a series of hand-crafted abstract shapes.
